  • E. Coli Cases Linked To Lettuce Continues To Rise

"At this time, no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified", the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says on its website, though health officials recommend throwing away any store-bought chopped romaine lettuce you've purchased recently.

People who got sick in the E. Coli outbreak across the country are as young as ten and as old as 85. Symptoms vary and can range from mild to severe diarrhea to nausea and vomiting. If you can not confirm the source of the romaine lettuce, do not buy it or eat it.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Wednesday that any consumers in the USA who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce should throw it away.

Eight cases of bad stomach symptoms in the Nome jail have been linked to the nationwide outbreak, state officials say.

After checking with the restaurants where the interviewees had eaten, it became clear the restaurants had used bagged, chopped romaine lettuce to make their salads. While no deaths related to the outbreak have been reported, five patients have suffered from kidney failure.

Yuma bills itself as the "winter lettuce capital" and hosts an annual Lettuce Festival.

The CDC is urging consumers to throw out their chopped romaine lettuce immediately.

"When we looked back into our PulseNet system we saw that there were other cases in other states with the same DNA fingerprint", Dr. Gieraltowski said.

Once retailers ensure the product didn't originate from Yuma, the lettuce will be returned to the shelf. Five of those people have suffered kidney failure as a result of eating the bacterium.

McAlister's Deli in Tucson is no longer using romaine lettuce in its salads due to the threat of contaminated supply. Cases should be reported to the Department of Health and Social Services by calling (907) 269- 8000. "What this outbreak suggests is that the source of contamination may actually be at the farm rather than the actual processing of the lettuce".
