  • APTOPIX Teacher Protests Kentucky

"I'm offended that people so cavalierly, and so flippantly, disregarded what's truly best for children", Bevin said. "I guarantee you somewhere today, a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have enough money to take care of them".

Last Friday, he told reporters that these striking teachers were responsible for "hundreds of thousands" of children being left home alone and all the dangers they then face.

The comments drew near-immediate backlash, with the Republican-led Kentucky House passing a pair of resolutions in condemnation.

On Sunday, Bevin said many people misunderstood his comments.

In a almost 4-minute video posted Sunday, Bevin didn't apologize for what he'd said, however - only that he took responsibility for not being clearer.

But Koenig noted he had many constituents call him and ask that he vote to override Bevin's veto of the two-year operating budget that included increased classroom spending.

"It is not my intent to hurt anybody in the process, but to help us all move forward together", he said. "What Governor Bevin said about teachers following their peaceful rally yesterday was reprehensible, and we are proud to join with the many others who have condemned his petty, spiteful remarks".

Kentucky Education Association President Stephanie Winkler said Friday she was "appalled" by the remark.

Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky's Secretary of State, called out Bevin's apology.

Republican Senator Whitney Westerfield thanked the governor saying, "Thank you, for making a public apology, taking responsibility for your words and recognizing the fear and hurt experienced by educators understandably worries about the future".

Comments from Governor Matt Bevin Friday created a new movement among teachers in Kentucky. The governor blamed teachers, whose demonstrations at the Capitol caused many schools to close.

"To say with one voice that the comments the Gov. Bevin made on Friday are unbecoming of someone of his stature, and we demand that he issue a true apology", said Richard Becker, a union representative and candidate for the Kentucky House of Representatives.

"The words that people say can have unintended consequences", Bevin said in the video.

Democrat Rep. James Kay of Versailles didn't hold back any sarcasm about Bevin's apology, either. "There is no rational comment I could make to that", Winkler said, the Courier-Journal reported. "His insults of teachers over the past year have been beneath the decorum of any respectable elected official".
