Google Play Hosts Dangerous Malware Intended For State-Style Surveillance

  • Over 3300 Android Apps on Google Play Store Are Improperly Tracking Kids

The most troubling findings were that almost 256 apps collected geolocation data without parental permission, 107 shared user's email address and 10 of them shared phone numbers. The study also found that 40% of these apps shared personal information without proper security protocols, and 39% disregarded contractual obligations aimed at protecting children's privacy.

A study conducted on 5,885 child-directed Android apps from the US Play Store, which are included in Google's Designed for Families programme, found that well over half of the apps potentially violated the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (Coppa). Furthermore, he added that these companies are not expected to reverse-engineer apps to make an informed decision whether it is safe for children to use.

However, it's up to organisations like the FTC to actually hold the app developers accountable.

Now that we're at least pretending to care about privacy in the wake of the Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal, a growing number of folks seem to be realizing that such privacy violations are the norm, not the exception. The US law protects children under 13 from intrusive data collection.

A study from researchers affiliated with the International Computer Science Institute created and used an automated system to find data on apps marketed or marked for being family-friendly.

"Google has basically looked the other way while it was able to generate revenues off of children's apps", Jeffrey Chester, the executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, told the Washington Post. Some of the apps named in the report include KidzInMind, TabTale's "Pop Girls-High School Band", and Fun Kid Racing. She was distributing an application titled Dardesh, which is a chat app that was available on Google's official Play Store for Android tools. 9to5Google has shared that they are also still not sure that how it will work, they just said that it vanishes in some situation and one of those situations is your static home screen.

That kid's app might be doing more than keeping your children busy, according to a new global study.

Google did not respond in time for a request for comment.

Google, in 2014, had allowed its users to reset their Android Advertising ID, which gave them better control on how online services track their data.

Almost all of the 1,280 apps (92%) with Facebook tie-ins were not properly using the social network's systems to prevent under-13 use. The security measure is the "standard method for securely transmitting information", the researchers said.
