WPI inflation eases to 2.47% in March

  • Wholesale Inflation stands at 2.47% in March manufacturing index rises

The Wholesale Price-Indexed (WPI) inflation of the country slipped marginally to 2.47 per cent in March from 2.48 per cent reported for the previous month because of falling prices of food items, especially vegetables and pulses. Manufactured products inflation accelerated to 3.03%, while sugar prices fell 10.48% in the month.

For 2018, the economists decreased the median inflation estimate for the eleventh consecutive week, to 3.48%, from 3.53% in the previous survey.

On the basis of Wholesale Price Index (WPI), inflation has steadily softened from 2.84 per cent in January to 2.47 per cent the following month. The "market consensus" is for a 0.5 percent q/q rise in prices on Thursday - 0.1 percent lower than the central bank's forecast.

Sunil Kumar Sinha, director, India Ratings and Research, said earlier it was the potato and now the tomato is adding distress to farmers. The retail inflation slowed down mainly on account of easing food prices including vegetables.

ANZ Bank New Zealand economists said the fees-free first-year tertiary education policy broadly offset any inflationary pressure coming from the usual annual increase in tobacco excise duty, with a 4 per cent fall in the education group instead of its typical first quarter rise.

"Unlike the retail inflation which dipped by 16bps in March 2018 over the previous month, the wholesale inflation remained flat".

The reduction in pulse prices was pegged at 20.58%, in vegetables at 2.70%, wheat at 1.19 % and egg, meat and fish at 0.82% in March. In the same month a year ago, the WPI inflation was 5.11 per cent.

It may be too early to draw any inference from such movement, the divergence suggests that impulse of demand recovery at the moment is being felt at the retail level and not so much at the wholesale level, he said. However, the price of petroleum coke and kerosene moved up. The index for electricity group rose by 2.9 per cent to 105.4 (provisional) from 102.4 (provisional) due to higher price of electricity (3 per cent).
