US strikes Syria following chemical weapons attack

Human rights activists in Syria and Western leaders accused the Assad regime of dropping barrel bombs full of chemicals on the town of Douma last weekend.

Here's what we know so far about the strikes.

Shortly after Trump's statement, British Prime Minister Theresa May released a statement saying she had "authorized British armed forces to conduct coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian Regime's chemical weapons capability and deter their use".

He says the overnight operation carried out by the United States, France and Britain followed that example.

Russian Federation said it was being "threatened" and said the air strikes "will not be left without consequences" in a statement from its ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, posted on Twitter.

It vowed in its statement that the fact-finding mission due to go to Douma later Saturday "will continue its deployment to the Syrian Arab Republic to establish facts around the allegations of chemical weapons use in Douma". The Syrian government and Russian Federation called this information untrue, while the USA and allies have blamed Bashar al-Assad for the attack. She described it as a "limited and targeted strike" aimed at minimizing civilian casualties.

The U.S. had no coordination or agreements with Russians before the strike, McKenzie said. "I urge the Security Council to assume its responsibilities and fill this gap".

"The goal of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread, and use of chemical weapons".

Jaish al-Islam has said it only agreed to the deal because of the Syrian government's purported use of toxic chemicals on Douma, which medics said killed more than 40 people.

"The red line set by France in May 2017 has been crossed", he said.

"We did not do any coordination with Russian Federation on these strikes, and neither did we pre-notify them", Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Friday night.

The US, UK, and France hit three targets in the Damascus suburbs around 9pm EDT on Friday using aircraft and cruise missiles launched from ships.

In his first reaction after military of the three countries carried out strikes against the chemical weapons infrastructure of Syria, Trump declared "Mission Accomplished". Attacking Syria is a crime.

A total of 105 missiles from the USA, the United Kingdom and France struck around 4 a.m. local time in Damascus.

US Defence Secretary James Mattis said the air strikes were a "one time shot" to send a strong message to Assad.

Defense Minister Florence Parly said this meant Russian Federation had been "warned beforehand" to avoid any confrontation or escalation.

"The worst apprehensions have come true".

"We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences", he said.

"Russia's Foreign Ministry described the strikes as an "outrageous violation" of worldwide law". He continued by saying that the United States and its allies have demonstrated a blatant disregard for global law.

Israel commended the swift response of the United States and its allies. Where is our "Thank you America?"
