As we previously reported, Environment Canada released an alert early this morning, warning residents of Southern Ontario that a "potentially historic ice storm" is set to hit tonight. Snow and ice pellets will likely affect portions of central and eastern Ontario Friday night into Saturday night with significant accumulations possible.

As much as 12 cm of snow and ice pellets with a freezing rain chaser is the latest weekend weather forecast for Ottawa from Environment Canada.

"Some people may think that it's just wet roads, not realizing that it's freezing rain coming down", Schmidt added. Some areas may receive more than 20 mm of freezing rain, which would result in higher amounts of ice accretion especially if temperatures hover a couple degrees below zero.

Environment Canada says it expects ice buildup of up to 25 millimetres, and wind gusts of up to 70 or 80 kilometres per hour that could bring down trees and power lines. The day could see a "prolonged" period of freezing rain before changing over to heavy rain.


Environment Canada posted a freezing rain warning early Saturday morning for Northern York Region, including Newmarket and Georgina. The temperature will fall to minus 3C in the afternoon.

The National Weather Service used an Ice Storm Waring for Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Monroe, Wyoming and Livingston counties from 2 p.m. Saturday through 2 p.m. Sunday.
