Milos Forman Dies At 86: Celebrities, Fans React To 'Amadeus' Director's Death

  • Milos Forman, Oscar-winning 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' director, dead at 86

His best known works tell someone else's story, from adaptations of Hair (a Broadway music) and Amadeus (a stage play) to biopics about Hustler founder Larry Flynt (The People vs. Larry Flynt) and comedian Andy Kaufman (Man on the Moon).

In 1968, he moved from what was then Czechoslovakia to the United Sates after Warsaw Pact troops invaded the country to crush the "Prague Spring".

Forman established his reputation in America four years later with the release of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, featuring Jack Nicholson in the lead. In 1975, Forman was given another chance, this time by producer Michael Douglas to direct the film version of Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".

Forman made his Hollywood debut with 1971's Taking Off, which received the Grand Priz at the Cannes Film Festival but was critically panned and failed at the box office.

Forman was one of the most well-known directors of the Czech New Wave, the filmmaking movement from the 1960s that produced piercing studies of life and politics in the former Czechoslovakia.

Paying tribute to the late filmmaker, Baby Driver director Edgar Wright tweeted: "Very sad to hear that the great director Milos Forman has passed away". College would allow him to pursue this passion and his travel to NY in the 1960s gave him the latitude he needed to make his films without censorship from communist authorities. The movie raked in 11 Oscar nominations and eight wins, including another Best Director award.

The People vs Larry Flynt (1996). He also shot a film version, released internationally in 2009. Forman's manager Dennis Aspland also confirmed the same.

He was father to two sets of twin boys, with his second and third wives. The filmmaker also wrote a biography in 1994 with Jan Novak, titled Turnaround: A Memoir.
