Given what has been reported about the changes, it sounds like Google is again hoping to update its web look with elements from its mobile operating system, such as a search bar with rounded corners. The compact view will be similar to the current Gmail design, something that current users should be happy about. When there's no internet access, Google Go retries failed search requests in the background and lets you know as soon as the results are ready. "Lastly, we've provided a pretrained semantic TensorFlow module for the community to experiment with their own sentence and phrase encoding".

We do however think that Google being behind this is a real possibility and there are good reasons for why they could want to put out a new Chromecast-type device with dedicated Adnroid TV functionality. At least, not yet we aren't.

While the timing of the redesign is a bit of a surprise, the news itself isn't. It typically has never communicated with any other Google service (reminders and calendar integration would be nice!) and lacks a smartphone app, which makes Tasks really tough to use. Specifically, a "fresh, clean look". Images of the presumed redesign were then leaked to Android Authority before appearing on Imgur with key info redacted via large black blocks.

Google has stated that the new Gmail design may be rolling out in a few weeks. The new Gmail really does seem fine on the whitespace front.

What is Gmail Adding to its Layout?

It's no secret that Gmail is getting a redesign, but it looks like some new non-visual features may also be inbound. New features for Gmail on the web include Smart Reply and Snooze. What does the snooze feature do? The new features are welcome additions, but they will not get in the way of how Gmail works right now.

You can configure the expiration date so that your email disappears after 1 week, 1 month, multiple years, etc.

Further, Google is reportedly creating plugins for the "Gmail Add-ons" feature, launched in October of 2017.

The new design also brings with it a handy sidebar with the option of using Google's calendar.
