Cruz walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the south Florida city of Parkland on February 14 and opened fire at students and staff with an AR-15-style semi-automatic weapon.
It's still unclear exactly how much money Cruz has access to and how much, if anything, he'll get from his mother's estate, ABC said. "He would like that money donated to an organization that the victims' families believe would be able to facilitate the healing in our community".
"Let it go to those who have been hurt, period", another member of his legal team, Howard Finkelstein, told the judge.
Finkelstein also said that if Cruz's inheritance, should he be entitled to it, is paid out in monthly installments, the total funds could amount to a million dollars.
His mother, Lynda Cruz, died November 1, leaving Nikolas Cruz with $25,000 from a life insurance policy, Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein said in the hearing.
Nikolas Cruz also has a bank account with $353 and receives dividends from about $2,200 in Microsoft stock, his lawyers said. Cruz's prison commissary account contains $669, his defense told the court.
Finkelstein told CNN he has no issue with Cruz's money, if it exists, going to the victims' families. She said he appears to be due $25,000 from a life insurance policy with Allstate and that up until two years ago he received an annuity of $3,333 that he shared with his mother.
The next step is an upcoming court date on April 27, and Judge Elizabeth Scherer said she would rule on Cruz's financial worth before then. He's being held without bail in a Broward County jail.
"Regarding his last comments about a plea offer, the State of Florida is not allowing Mr. Cruz to choose his own punishment for brutally murdering 17 people", said prosecutor Shari Tate. "Mr. Cruz is, in fact, potentially a beneficiary of those funds".
ABC reported Cruz's attorneys told the court on Wednesday that he was ready to plead immediately. The judge's decision on whether Cruz can afford private counsel is significant in a case that could last years and is expected to be one of the most expensive in Broward County history. "We will put the victims' families through another hell".
