Sprint and T-Mobile are back at it with talks about merging

11 April, 2018, 08:05 | Author: Samuel Sharp
  • T-Mobile and Sprint are once again reportedly in merger discussions

Indeed, according to a recent report from Cowen, T-Mobile's merger plan with Sprint previous year involved shutting down around 30% of Sprint's cell sites and then deploying Sprint's 2.5 GHz spectrum nationwide.

Last November, T-Mobile and Sprint confirmed that they'd ended their oft-rumored merger negotiations, and we thought that that'd be the end of that.

Sprint is owned by SoftBank, a Japanese telecom conglomerate, while T-Mobile is owned by German's Deutsche Telekom.

Both companies have controlling shareholders. Discussions are at a preliminary phase, the WSJ reports, and so they may still fall apart yet again. On the other hand, a merger would remove the cheapest wireless network in America, Sprint, from the picture, and remove downwards price pressure from the marketplace.

Could the Sprint-T-Mobile merger be back on? While we don't have many details on the Trump Administration's view of the merger, the result of the AT&T trial should serve as a litmus test going forward. Competition is low, unlimited plans are nonexistent, and a reasonable plan costs over $100 a month.

A number of other large investors have also added to or reduced their stakes in S. Bank of New York Mellon Corp increased its holdings in shares of Sprint by 1.5% during the third quarter.

Normally, such a mammoth merger would be subject to close scrutiny from the FCC, but the new-look FCC under Trump appointee (and former Verizon lawyer) Ajit Pai has shown no signs of wanting to be tough on big business. T-Mobile, which has become the most innovative and fastest growing wireless operator in the states under the leadership of president and CEO John Legere, was said to be interested in Sprint's hoard of high-frequency 2.5GHz spectrum. One potential issue with the merger is the ongoing antitrust case surrounding AT&T's requested acquisition of Time Warner. Will T-Mobile and Sprint finally exchange wedding vows?
