Overseas, Focus will be available as a four-door sedan, five-door wagon and hatchback, Ford said.

The Ford Focus may not be the best-selling vehicle - or even the best-selling Ford - in the United Kingdom - that's the Fiesta - but globally it's only beaten by the massive sales enjoyed by the Ford F-150 pickup.

Each trim grade gets its own distinct look and materials, including fine-grain wood-effect finishes and premium leather for Vignale; sporty carbon fibre-effect finishes and red stitching for the ST-Line; and more rugged textured materials for the Active. The Focus is the first vehicle to embrace this new strategy.

The 2019 Focus has more interior room thanks to a longer wheelbase, which provides more room for rear seat passengers.

The exterior of the global Focus has a longer hood and looks larger than the current generation, though its overall size doesn't change.

The new Focus will also get Ford's suite of active safety features, called Co-Pilot360, that includes adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking.

At the reveal of the new Focus in London on Tuesday, Ford also confirmed more versions are in the pipeline including a petrol-electric model and a super-sports performance variant due for release next year.

Unlike other cars that rely on steering to change the beam of the headlights, the world first technology on the new Ford Focus uses cameras in the windscreen to scan the road ahead to detect corners and roundabouts that are up to 65 metres away.

The front end of the vehicle also features a slightly different design to the rest of the range, in the same way that the Vignale and ST-Line models also feature bumpers that subtly communicate the cars' differing uses.

The cheapest models will come with a non-turbo 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine matched to a six-speed auto, while dearer models will come with a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine matched to an eight-speed auto.

You can also go for adaptive front lighting or evasive steering assist - all self-explanatory but likely to be on the more expensive models. It will be manufactured in China, and it will go on sale there and in Europe this year and on the North American market in the second half of 2019.

For more on the Ford Focus, read the in-depth reviews at The Car Connection. The next-generation Focus will be tailored to each global region. The Ford Focus is made in China by the Changan-Ford joint venture.

The Focus is the first model to be underpinned by Ford's new C2 platform that brings a 40 and 20 per cent increase in front crash load capability and torsional rigidity respectively. Ford will also offer 1.5-litre EcoBoost (148bhp or 180bhp) petrols and a 148bhp EcoBlue diesel, while an eight-speed automatic transmission will be available for engines at 118bhp or more.

A nook in the dashboard will offer optional wireless charging, and SYNC 3 will be offered with an optional 8-inch touchscreen.
