Russian Federation warns against snap judgments on alleged Syria chemical attack

A USA official says the United States is examining "how best to deal with" Syria's upcoming presidency of the U.N.'s top forum on disarmament in the wake of an alleged chemical weapons attack in the war-battered country.

US ambassador to the United Nations addresses emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on suspected chemical attack in Syria.

US President Donald Trump said today he will decide on military action in Syria within hours, as Washington readied its response to a "heinous attack on innocent Syrians with banned chemical weapons".

But US Ambassador Nikki Haley said the "world must see justice done".

Russia's envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, has reiterated that Russian Federation will support a thorough investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons in the rebel-held town of Douma over the weekend.

"History will record this as the moment when the Security Council either discharged its duty or demonstrated its utter and complete failure to protect the people of Syria", Haley added.

The crisis was due to be discussed later on Monday at an urgent UN Security Council meeting, while the United States also circulated a draft resolution for a new independent inquiry of chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

Trump told his cabinet colleagues that "atrocious and horrible" attacks like these could not be allowed to happen.

"We re going to make a decision tonight or very shortly thereafter", he said.

A Syrian woman holds a child and runs for cover following Syrian government air strikes on the Eastern Ghouta rebel-held enclave of Douma, on the outskirts of the capital Damascus on March 20, 2018.

In November, Russia used its veto power at the council to block the renewal of a previous UN-led probe that found the Syrian air force had dropped sarin on the town of Khan Sheikhun in April a year ago.

The punitive raid did not draw U.S. forces any deeper into Syria s civil war, but nor did it dissuade Syria or its Russian and Iranian backers from pursuing their campaign against rebel groups. "But, we are also working with our allies on any action that is necessary".

Trump, who has long courted better relations with Russian president Vladimir Putin, indicated that whoever is responsible for killing at least 48 people with what is alleged to be a chemical weapon will pay a "big price". "Everybody's going to pay a price". "He will. Everybody will", the American president warned.

Officials in Washington were seeking to verify early reports by rescuers and others that the Assad government was culpable.

US President Donald Trump has already accepted the chemical attacks as a given.

Syrian state media and Russian Foreign Ministry did not take responsibility for Saturday's attacks in Douma.

As the United Nations debate took place, a huge blast tore through a multi-story building in the jihadist-held city of Idlib, in northern Syria. At least 49 people are reported to have been killed in the attack on April 7.

But if Syria's recent conduct is any sign, a few Tomahawks won't stop the use of chemical weapons in the country.

Calling Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a "monster", Ms Haley said that if the UN Security Council acts or not, "either way, the United States will respond". Syria and Russian Federation accused Israel of carrying out the attack.

Global bodies led by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were trying to establish exactly what happened in Douma, a rebel-held town in the eastern Ghouta district.

Moscow said it warned the USA of "grave repercussions" if it carried out an attack against Syrian government forces.
