Palestinians killed in Gaza protests by Israeli troops

Numbers were down from the previous Friday, when tens of thousands approached the border in demonstrations that saw Israeli forces kill 19 Palestinians, making it the bloodiest day in Gaza since a 2014 war.

Also in Rafah, Israeli soldiers shot at the head of Muhammad Said Mousa al-Haj Saleh, 33, killing him.

The report further referred to concerns by the Israeli army sources that in case of many Palestinian casualties, the global community might renew diplomatic pressure on the regime.

Thousands of Palestinians have been staging demonstrations on Gaza Strip's eastern border with Israel against the decade-long Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands since last week.

"The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) uses means such as warnings, riot dispersal means, and as a last resort firing live rounds in a precise, measured way", it said Saturday. More than 1,600 others were wounded.

Nine Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli forces and at least 1,060 were wounded according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza.

"In a visit to al-Shifa hospital, the largest in Gaza, where a state of emergency had been declared, OCHA witnessed 115 injured in the operation rooms, departments of intensive care, orthopedics and trauma departments".

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society, which has established five advanced medical posts near various protest sites, also warned of a shortage of medical supplies and of personal protective equipment for their 400-person team.

The killings of demonstrators, including one journalist, elicited criticism from the United Nations, EU and elsewhere. So far, over 30 Palestinian have been killed and hundreds injured by the Israeli military and police forces.

Already reeling under a severe humanitarian crisis due to the long-running Israeli blockade, hospitals in Gaza are now overwhelmed by the large number of injured and is in urgent need of anesthesia and other essentials.

On Saturday, the European Union questioned Israel's "use of force" against the Gazans, calling for "restraint" in the besieged enclave.

The Hamas-linked Palestinian Information Center's twitter feed said the shots were fired at peaceful protesters in the border region near Khan Younis.

Israel has no official death toll figures.

Mourners and journalists carry the body of Palestinian journalist Yasser Murtaja, during his funeral in Gaza City on April 7, 2018.
