  • Report: Steve Spurrier signs on as head coach in new spring football league, the Alliance of American Football

He won the Heisman trophy in 1966 while at Florida before playing 10 years in the NFL. In 1976, he was sent to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He served as a consultant and ambassador at the University of Florida, a role he'll continue until the Alliance's season begins on February 9.

The AAF will feature eight teams with a season that runs ten weeks.

The league, started by TV executive Charlie Ebersol and former NFL front office executive Bill Polian, will field several teams across the country. As an National Football League coach, Spurrier recorded an overall record of 12-20, while earning an impressive 228-89-2 mark at the collegiate level. He then returned to Duke as a head coach and offensive coordinator, where he was named the ACC Coach of the year in 1988 and 1989. A five-time SEC coach of the year, he became the first Heisman Trophy victor to coach another Heisman Trophy victor in Danny Wuerffel.

Spurrier, who is a former Heisman victor and National Champion as a coach, last coached for the Gamecocks.

Coach Steve Spurrier of Florida celebrates with his team after defeating Alabama in the SEC Championship at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 7, 1996. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as the Washington Redskins' head coach and another 12 seasons with the Florida Gators. He resigned in December 2003 with three years and $15 million remaining on his contract.

Spurrier has not coached since 2015 when he stepped down from his role at SC. The first game and the championship game will be carried by CBS.

Steve Spurrier, who was the University of Florida's first Heisman Trophy victor and later coached the Gators to six Southeastern Conference titles and the program's first national title, is returning to football.

He plans to continue in that role, but will take a break when the league's spring season rolls around. In 2017, Spurrier became just the fourth person to be inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. He now serves as a consultant at the University of Florida.

Spurrier's team will play its home games at the University of Central Florida's Spectrum Stadium, which sits roughly 13 miles outside of Orlando.
