In reporting gender pay, firms with more than 250 staff have to publish data on the average difference between male and female employees.

More than 10,000 companies published data, with more than 1,000 waiting until the last day to report their pay grades. People are still arguing whether the gender pay gap even exists, even before figuring out where it comes from and how to make it go away - this is about proving that the problem is real, as a first step towards fixing it.

The biggest pay gaps are in construction, financial services, education, mining, communication, and energy, where the pay gap is in excess of 15%.

The Government has introduced a tool to search for companies and reveal the differences in pay between men and women. (By the time the rules took effect this year, Cameron was out of office, replaced by the U.K.'s second female prime minister, Theresa May.) Eliminating the difference could add 150 billion pounds ($196 billion) to annual gross domestic product by 2025 by boosting female participation in the workforce, encouraging women to work longer hours and moving them into more productive jobs such as those in science and engineering, according to a study by McKinsey & Co. Too often they don't get considered for better paid roles, and because they don't get the same chances as men, they lose the aspiration to apply for the higher paid jobs.

Companies that have offered up solutions to their pay gaps have done so voluntarily; the government initiative that prompted the disclosures does not, in fact, require companies to explain their gaps-let alone do anything to narrow them. This was calculated on the average hourly rate of each non-school employee, both full time and part time.

In a statement accompanying the report, Morna Cook, senior director, HR at Universal Music U.K. said that the data "shows a gender pay gap which is unacceptable to us".

Caroline James Nock, vice president and HR director at Marie Stopes International, said that the figures were down to employment practices in its United Kingdom clinics, where most surgeons and anaesthetists were men, but most nurses and healthcare assistants are women.

However, the NHS' workforce is more than three-quarters female, so there are more women in every pay band.

A total of 25 councils have no gap, while Adur District Council in West Sussex posted a gender pay gap of 50.3 per cent in favour of women.

She said this was linked to a broader trend in the healthcare sector.

The airline's submission showed that its median hourly pay rate was 45.5% lower for women.

Nimax Theatres, which has shows such as Harry Potter And The Cursed Child and Everybody's Talking About Jaime playing at their venues, has a gap of 14.9%. Meanwhile, at the British Museum, women out earn men by 4% and at Tate Gallery women are paid 2.4% more than their male counterparts, with 70% of its highest earners being women.

The mean gender pay gap at Paydens - which operates more than 100 pharmacies across the south of England - was 20%, while the median was 4%. "One such is the gender pay gap".

Companies who fail to provide data face legal action and there was a last-minute dash to file the information before the deadline - with more than 15 per cent sending their information between Tuesday at 4pm and the cut-off point.
