  • 18 States Sue Trump Administration Over Census Citizenship Question

CT state officials have joined a coalition of attorneys general and cities in filing a lawsuit seeking to block the Trump Administration from demanding citizenship information in the 2020 decennial Census.

The citizenship question appears on Page 11 of the submitted document, which was obtained by ABC News, and is the second question on the census form (the first question asks a respondent's age). Attorney General Karl A. Racine said the citizenship question could undermine residents.

"In the last decade, Seattle's population has skyrocketed, which is why it's critical the upcoming Census provides accurate and fair representation", she said. In Philadelphia, non-citizens pay approximately $6 billion in taxes each year and immigrant-owned businesses contribute significantly to Main Street business growth.

The formula for reapportionment favors states that are considered sanctuaries for illegal residents at the expense of states that follow immigration laws and cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. "They open new businesses, create job opportunities and generate tax revenue", Attorney General Shapiro said. The NAACP has said the plans for the census will lead to a massive undercounting of blacks. "Minnesota allocates state aid to counties and municipalities - such as local government aid, state aid for roads, and community corrections aid - using census results".

The US Department of Commerce said in a release that citizenship questions had been included on previous censuses. In 1933, Pennsylvania had 36 House seats; today it has just 18.

The census already asks Americans about their citizenship as part of the American Community Survey, a smaller annual survey that goes out to about 3 million people. Democrats and activists claim that the question will spook immigrants - mainly those in the country illegally or of so-called "mixed-status" families - from participating. Democratic members of New York's congressional delegation said Tuesday that the decision to add a citizenship question was an attack on states, like NY, with high immigrant populations in an attempt to cut their congressional representation and share of federal funding.

The lawsuit argues past questions were asked in "a different political climate, before anti-immigrant attitudes were as salient and consequential" as they are now, citing "unprecedented anxiety" in immigrant communities, including interviewees specifically stating fears about deportation, documented by the Census Bureau itself during testing previous year - when citizens questions weren't even involved. Former U.S. Census Bureau directors of both parties have historically supported the exclusion of questions relating to citizenship and legal status on this basis.

POLITICS- New York Elected Officials joined together to denounce the Trump Administration's decision to include citizenship questions on the 2020 census.

Under the Constitution, the U.S. Census Bureau has an obligation to determine "the whole number of persons in each state".
