Companies still to report as gender pay gap reporting deadline looms

Cricket and tennis are the sports with the largest disparities between men's and women's pay, figures released by the Government have revealed.

Employers who fail to comply could face court action and an "unlimited" fine.

All UK companies with 250 or more employees are required to file their data by midnight tonight, with more than 9,100 having now submitted data up to date as of 5 April previous year. The civil service gender pay gap stands at 12.7 per cent and the public sector as a whole at 19.4 per cent.

While the percentage of male employees in the trust's lower three pay quartiles stands between 14% and 18%, this jumps up to 25.5% for the top quartile.

A company may pay men and women in the same role the same wage but still have a gender pay gap, for example if most of their senior positions are filled by men who earn more.

Jack Sealy, which supplies air and power tools, also had a negative gap - its mean average showed women were paid 2% more, though its median favoured men by 3.9%.

Sony Music UK today reported a pay gap of 4.6% (median) - better than the national average of 9.1%. Unilever(UL), Toyota (TM), Mars and BP (BP) say women in specific divisions were paid more than their male colleagues.

Women in the United Kingdom can expect to be paid around 81 pence for every £1 a man makes. "Our gender pay gap reflects this".


Those wishing to find out their own employer's disclosure can visit the government's pay gap website, which shows the average difference in earnings across each organisation.

The BBC said in January that it would be more transparent about what it pays its correspondents, and offer salaries in narrower bands.

Over half of women (51 per cent) who have a bank account are likely to switch their bank, compared to 37 per cent of men. KFC, Matalan, Starbucks, Costa, McDonald's and Primark, British Museum and the armed forces have no gender pay gap.

Horizontal segregation is another common reason for gender pay gaps, and describes the way roles that are male dominated tend to pay more than roles that are female dominated, despite them frequently requiring similar amounts of skill.

She points to deeper cultural issues, such as underrepresentation of women in industries that are better paid, and a higher valuation of full-time workers, as some of the factors that companies should look into.
