Some are positive, such as those that aim to raise awareness about an important cause; some are benign, like viral makeup trends; and some are risky, like the new "condom snorting challenge".

In answer to the several queries we've received: yes, the videos are real.

Like many questionable young trends, the Condom Challenge isn't new, but rather a resurgence of something bored teens have been doing for years.

As with the Tide pod challenge, the press went into full-on moral panic mode in their coverage of condom snorting.

The condom challenge went viral for the first time in 2013, when another YouTuber, Savannah Strong, filmed a video of herself doing the same thing while the song "22" by Taylor Swift played in the background.

Condoms are meant to prevent pregnancy and the transmission of STIs during sex. Though videos of condom snorting aren't banned on social media yet, it's something no one should attempt.

Condoms are usually made of latex rubbery, and are covered in a lubricant or spermicide - which could be unsafe if inhaled or swallowed. The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) treated 215 teenagers related to intentionally ingesting single packet laundry detergent since January 2018, according to the AAPCC's website.

Health authorities warn that the new "game" poses a real risk and can kill. Bruce Y. Lee, an associate professor of worldwide health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, penned an article for Forbes citing examples of fairly serious injuries sustained by people who accidentally inhaled or ingested condoms during oral sex. One suffered from pneumonia, while the other got a small piece of the condom lodged in her appendix and had to undergo surgery.

A different "condom challenge" made the rounds back in 2015, involving videos of water-filled condoms being dropped on people's heads, drenching them, reported The Debrief.
