Google will close the service for link shortening

  • Google Ending URL Shortener Support In Favor Of Dynamic Links

According to The Verge, new and anonymous users won't be able to create links through the goo.gl console after April 13, but existing users will be able to use the service for another year, after which it will be discontinued completely.

Google has announced that the goo.gl service will be shutting down.

Google is sunsetting the service in favor of Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). As a result users will not be able to create new links starting from April 13, 2018. Alternatively, developers and users are offered the services Bitly and Ow.ly. This way registered users will have time to download all their existing data related to shorten URLs they have created using goo.gl. After the expiring date, the links will still work, but users will no longer be able to access the console itself after March 30th, 2019.

Google's URL shortening service worked similarly to others; users could paste any URL into a form on the Google URL Shortener website to turn it into a shorter URL that was easier to share or publish. "However, existing short links will not be migrated to the Firebase console/API".

As upsetting as this closure could be, the fact that there are many URL shortener alternatives make this a minor deal for most. This is achieved by the use of FDLs, and thus Google is moving its efforts towards that service. "We're excited to grow and improve the product going forward". You can manage all your short links and their analytics through the goo.gl console during this period.

Also, short URLs that have already been created till today, would continue to function as it is and would be redirecting internet users to the mapped links. First, it was used for Google Toolbar and Feedburner, but it became goo.gl and opened up to the public in September 2010.
