Facebook calls housing lawsuit 'without merit'

  • A lit sign is seen at the entrance to Facebook's corporate headquarters location in Menlo Park

It affirms that Facebook scratched "years worth" of call and content information, including whether it was incoming, outgoing or missed, and also the date and time of each call, the number dialed, the individual called, and the duration of each call.

That's the surprise some users are discovering as people across the globe start taking a closer look at the data tech companies are collecting about all of us. Have you talked about being a stay-at-home mom, the single parent of a toddler, or a disabled veteran?

Facebook is now facing allegations that British political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica improperly used the details of tens of millions of Facebook users to help Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election. On Tuesday, the social media giant confirmed it via Facebook Developer News section that the company is not accepting any submission for now.

"It is already a challenge for women, families with children, people with disabilities and other under-served groups to find housing", Rice added.

The suit asks the court to order Facebook to change its advertising platform and practices to comply with fair housing laws. "Facebook ought to be opening doors to housing opportunities instead of closing them". Alternatively, the opt-in to data collection may not have been very clear or set as a default response in certain cases. "Facebook's algorithms can ensure exclusion and deny access to housing". "We believe this lawsuit is without merit, and we will defend ourselves vigorously".

The lawsuit was filed earlier in the day by the National Fair Housing Alliance and other related organizations.

Facebook's app review feature available on the platform was put on hold by the company since last week. "Your information is securely stored and we do not sell this information to third parties", it said.

Rather than answer the underlying question - why does Facebook need to know this about me?! - the company is trying to reframe this scandal on terms that it can win. According to the suit, the groups found Facebook continues to let advertisers exclude users based on their gender, family status and even certain "interest" categories, including whether they are interested in "disabled parking permits".
