  • Policeman killed in Egypt in suspected car bombing ahead of election

Alexandria's director of security was traveling in a convoy through the city when the bomb exploded, the Interior Ministry said.

Police believe it was an attempt to assassinate the security chief of Alexandria, the country's second largest city.

The attack came just days before Egypt's presidential election, in which Abdel Fatah al-Sisi is virtually certain to be re-elected.

Egypt's Ministry of Interior confirmed that the bomb targeted Maj.

The security chief, escorted by guards, appeared on Egyptian television visiting the scene shortly after the attack. It was reported that the public prosecutor has ordered an investigation.

Pictures shared on social media showed smoke billowing from the burned out remains of a vehicle.

A auto bomb killed two people and injured several others in the centre of the Egyptian port city of Alexandria on Saturday, officials said.

The Islamic State terror organization claimed responsibility for both attacks.

Sissi breezed to an election win in 2014, one year after leading a military coup that ousted the freely elected Islamist leader Mohamed Morsi.

The extremists of Ansar Beit al-Maddis have killed hundreds of soldiers, policemen and civilians, mainly in its North Sinai stronghold but also elsewhere in Egypt.

Daesh claimed the 2015 bombing of a Russian airliner carrying tourists from the South Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, which killed all 224 people on board. In November, an attack on worshipers at a North Sinai mosque killed more than 300 people and almost a month later nine people were killed at the Mar Mina Church in Helwan, Cairo ahead of Coptic Christian celebrations in December.

The explosion killed a policeman and another person and wounded four other police officers, according to the state news agency MENA. Sine then Egypt has been under a state of emergency.

The president's ultimatum came after suspected Daesh gunmen massacred more than 300 worshippers in a Sinai mosque associated with Sufi Muslims, seen by IS as heretics.
