  • Students Given Detention For National Walkout Stage Peaceful Protest in Memory of Parkland Victims

CHS has held assemblies to discuss the growing concerns over student safety in schools.

Alongside Student Council President Sarah Kenny, Dave was an active member in organizing the University March 14 against gun violence and in solidarity with the victims of the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

At least 17 marches are scheduled across the state, in cities big and small - including Bend, Burns, Medford and Roseburg, where a 2015 shooting took place at Umpqua Community College.

Students at Exeter Union High School did not plan anything for the walkout.

"Everything in Ramona has been smooth sailing", Wilds said. Two arrests for truancy were made in Poway, she said.

The Portland school district said students were not permitted to leave school grounds and those who did were told they would receive unexcused absences.

Michelle Cummings, who has a daughter in the middle school, said she believed that the date and time of the event was an implication of something other than a memorial.

The lunchtime forum at Ramona High was led by seniors Sophie Underwood, Allison Amick, Jenni Kao and Alex Damnati. In addition to the Florida shooting, there have been other disgusting events including the mass shooting in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary school in CT where a shooter murdered 26 people, a lot of them young children.

"I couldn't be more proud of our student body with the way they've handled themselves", Drew said.

"It's not a static process; this is a dynamic process", Anderson said, with school and public safety personnel working to adapt to new circumstances, approaches and new technology.

Local police and school personnel quickly moved into place, locked down the school, warned those who had yet not arrived to stay away from St. John's and another nearby school.

In a letter sent to parents the night after the walkout, Rattingan explained that the detention was for violating school rules about leaving the building, not for expressing political viewpoints. And you're assuming that this person's moral, ethical being would allow them to shoot and kill, likely, someone that they knew, maybe taught in a class, maybe felt feelings of sympathy. "In its most primal form, this walkout is about school safety and against senseless violence".

Amick, vice president of Ramona High's Friends of Rachel club, said club members strive to spread positivity and create a chain reaction of positivity. "We are in a unique opportunity to give those 20 million a chance to actually vote on it", he said. "But we are all unique and that makes each one of us very special indeed. We have the power to walk out of the school, soon to vote, and after that, have the power to sit at the Congressional table and make change happen".

"We've replaced discussion with winner-take-all politics, we've replaced compromise and an assertion for common ground with dogma", he said.

"None of us want to live with the threat of being shot in our schools", he added. We're here to learn. "We know each and every time this happens that these are real people we see as unknown faces". "We stand by that".

"Half of shooters are motivated by domestic violence", Laughon said.

"They were all great people and all of them were attractive in their own way and now they're gone", Bounds said. One estimate put the total number of walkouts at 1,000 or more. But the US has historically struggled to pass national gun legislation - partially because it lacks the kind of data the country needs for meaningful debate, experts say.

Gun violence was not an issue he thought he'd have to deal with when he began his teaching career 32 years ago, he said.

"I think that what's different about this is the kids who are speaking up", de la Puerta said. My heart hurts to think about the families.

Among the participants was MVA sophomore Shannon Ryan who said a movement is under way to honor the victims, and in particular a dancer killed at the school named Cara Loughran. Ryan attends the Rose-Ritchie Academy of Irish Dance in Rancho Penasquitos.

Referring to the September 11 terrorist attacks of 2001 and other tragic events, she said "the first big landmark event like that for our generation was Sandy Hook [Elementary School in CT in 2012]".

Leavitt said the open forum was not meant to dictate how students would be heard, but materials would be available if they wanted to make posters to express their feelings.

Morelli said she's encouraged by the showing of support for the movement across the nation.

A group of students who survived the deadly Parkland school shooting last month slammed mainstream media for not paying attention to or devoting enough airtime to gun violence in predominately Black communities. "We support the voice of our students". "We need to fight for our lives, fight for our rights and fight for what we believe is right".
