Explosion reported at FedEx Ground facility in San Antonio

  • Theory Emerging on Motive of Austin Bombings

Investigators are trying to determine whether an explosion early Tuesday at a FedEx facility outside San Antonio is connected to four explosions that have rattled the Austin, Texas, area this month.

Schertz police responded to a call about an explosion at the FedEx distribution facility around 12:25 a.m. Tuesday.

About 75 people were working in the facility at the time of the explosion.

The latest Austin bomb, on Sunday, used a trip wire and injured two.

Lee didn't have details about the size, weight or description of the package.

Another official onsite said it is not believed Schertz or San Antonio were the intended targets. Schertz lies on the highway between Austin and San Antonio.

The 911 caller stated there were nails and metal in the bomb and that the package was going to Austin. "There is no secondary device at the Schertz facility".

FedEx, however, said Tuesday afternoon that the same person who shipped the package that exploded had shipped a second package, which has been secured. We are thankful that there were no serious injuries from this criminal activity. A hazardous materials team is now investigating the latest package. "Our main priority is the safety regarding the employees of FedEx and our citizens".

While SAPD was not able to confirm that a second package was found in Schertz, FedEx released the following statement confirming that the person who shipped the package that exploded in Schertz had shipped another package, although they did not say to what destination.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesperson said they did not know where the package came from or whether it is linked with the Austin incidents.

"I hope his biggest mistake was going through FedEx", McCaul, who has spoken to federal investigators and Austin police Chief Brian Manley, said of the bomber in a phone interview.

The FBI said Tuesday evening that the suspicious package, which was sent to a FedEx shipping center near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, contained an "explosive device", the AP reported. On the night of the bombing, one of the victims was riding a bike in the street and the other was on a sidewalk when they crossed a tripwire that he said knocked "them both off their feet".

The most recent incident in Austin happened Sunday and left two people hurt. "And we hear this news about FedEx, and FedEx is right there". We have our national response team here. DMI Inspectors are trained to recognize the common characteristics of suspicious mail and are highly proficient in the use of state-of-the-art equipment to include portable X-ray machines. She was treated and released from a hospital. In order to prevent attempts to compromise the effectiveness of our investigative methods, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service does not comment publicly on our investigative procedures and operational protocols. Two men in their 20s were injured in the blast but are expected to be OK. The bomb blew up next to a fence where bicyclists triggered a tripwire.

This time in the San Antonio area, the FBI and ATF are on the scene investigation.

"We now need the community to have extra level of vigilance and pay attention to any suspicious device", Manley said.

Despite bombing tactics that have now shifted, investigators have repeated prior warnings about not touching unexpected packages and urged people to be wary of any stray object left in public. A reward of $115,000 has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for these crimes.

Ex-FBI agents say law enforcement officers are likely sifting through microscopic forensic evidence and analyzing behavioral evidence in order to find a suspect or suspects.
