Packers to release wide receiver Jordy Nelson

  • Nelson has played for only one team in his NFL career which started in 2008

The New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers are vying to sign free agent tight end Jimmy Graham, according to CBS Sports Writer Jared Dubin.

Despite a bounce-back year in 2016, Nelson limped to the finish line without Aaron Rodgers under center in 2017, finishing the season with 53 catches for 482 yards and six touchdowns.

The Seahawks backup tight end, Luke Willson, is also a free agent so the position could end up being a serious problem for the team.

Some though new GM Brian Gutekunst might be a bit gunshy about signing a big-game tight end, given how the Bennett experiment ended. Both Nelson and Cobb have salary-cap numbers in excess of $10 million for 2018 and their situations are uncertain.

Packers fans wanted off-season moves.

The team announced on Tuesday that they have released Jordy Nelson.

"We can not thank Jordy enough for all that he has given the Green Bay Packers and our community for the past 10 years", Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said. He has caught at least nine touchdowns in five of the last seven seasons.

Nelson and Rodgers hold the Packers' record for most touchdowns by a quarterback-receiver duo with 65. Even at age 32, soon to be 33 in May, as long as receivers can get open, then age shouldn't matter.

"I don't think at this time (but) you never say never", Gutekunst said.

Nelson saw his production drop last season after Rodgers broke his collarbone. The bidding for him could become too rich for the Packers' blood, leading perhaps to a less expensive cornerback signing. He caught four passes for 41 yards during his late-season call-up. He later was honored as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Gutekunst has already made one significant deal, sending another top draft pick, Damarious Randall to the Cleveland Browns for quarterback DeShone Kizer and a swap of 4th and 5th round draft choices.
