Trump gun plan: No age limits; states decide whether to arm teachers

After last month's deadly shooting at a Florida high school, the president advocated for increasing the minimum age to purchase an assault weapon to 21.

President Trump's proposal calling for specially trained teachers to carry guns is drawing opposition from the groups that have been organizing large pro-gun control protests at the Minnesota Legislature, including Minnesota Moms Demand Action.

President Donald Trump saluted the World Series-winning Houston Astros during a White House ceremony on Monday, praising the team's character in winning last year's showpiece.

Sarah Sanders, the White House press secretary, has said the President wants to expedite the court process, not circumvent it.

Olorunnipa said that "certain things" Trump supports do not have similarly widespread approval in Congress, so he only moves forward with what he can get done.

Sunday's announcement also included continued support for arming teachers and other school personnel on a volunteer basis, another controversial stance supported by the NRA.

Trump's tweet came after his White House put out a plan to combat school shootings that doesn't increase the minimum age for purchasing assault weapons to 21 - an idea Trump publicly favored just last month - and leaves the question of arming teachers to states and local communities. "You can't be petrified".

"He hasn't backed away from these things at all", Sanders said. "We can't just keep setting up blue-ribbon committees", he said, adding that all they do is "talk, talk, talk". "We really need to focus on prevention, and I identifying risks early on, and that starts by addressing social and emotional well being and increasing access and consistency and transparency to mental health services", said DeVos. Cox also said the background check legislation being supported by the White House would go too far, these people said.

The president today also repeated his criticism of keeping guns out of schools, tweeting: "If schools are mandated to be gun free zones, violence and danger are given an open invitation to enter". That was Mr. Trump the following week, chastising members of his own party for not backing age restrictions on gun purchases as he challenged lawmakers to pass "comprehensive" gun control and stand up to the gun lobby.

He still supports legislation aimed at providing more data for the background check system: a database of people who are not legally allowed to buy guns. Such information could prevent someone from purchasing a gun if discovered during a background check.

During the background call, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos also announced she'll be chairing a new Federal Commission on School Safety as part of the administration's focus on studying the larger issue of school shootings.

However Trump's election to the Oval Office has ushered in an era of antagonism, with several athletes from different sports saying they would not want to attend a reception hosted by the USA leader. "Being a part of the United States, you expect at least to be treated the same way when tragedies like this happen". "So what he is pushing forward are things that can immediately be accomplished, either through the administration or that have broad base bipartisan support in Congress".

"That actually seems smart, and it seems like bold leadership to me - to push through on things that help protect kids while not ignoring some other policies that the president supports, which we're doing".
