  • Bairstow ton seals series win

Ross Taylor batted through a painful leg injury to make a valiant 181 not out and guide New Zealand to a five-wicket win over England in the fourth one-day cricket global Wednesday, leveling the five-match series at 2-2.

Tight England bowling restricted New Zealand to 223 in their deciding one-day worldwide with the innings propped up by half centuries from Mitchell Santner and Henry Nicholls.

After Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid wreaked havoc with three wickets apiece, Bairstow hit nine fours and six sixes, while fellow opener Alex Hales posted 61 as England cruised to 155 without loss before the former was dismissed hit wicket by Trent Boult (1-50).

Bairstow, who smashed 138 in the fourth game in Dunedin, hit his century off 58 balls to help England get off to a brilliant start.

Hales, back in place of the injured Jason Roy for his first match of the series and since he announced his white-ball-only future, was no slouch either and passed 2,000 ODI runs for his trouble.

Eoin Morgan fell for 8 as he sent a long hop from Sodhi straight to Colin de Grandhomme on the boundary, but Joe Root's 23 and an entertaining 18-ball cameo from Stokes saw England home with 17.2 overs remaining.

Bairstow hit nine fours and six maximums in his 60-ball effort.

Hales was the second wicket to fall when England were on 177 and just 47 runs short of victory. Woakes and Rashid ripped through their line-up as they scalped three wickets each with the other bowlers chipping in nicely and supporting them.

New Zealand were dealt a blow hours out from the winner-takes-all ODI when Ross Taylor was ruled out with a leg injury.

"I suppose it is always a possibility but one of the strengths of this team from a bowling point of view is that we've always got six options", he told Sky Sports Cricket.

Colin Munro went on the second ball he faced, caught behind off Woakes for the third time in five innings and for his second consecutive duck.

"That's something I'm really trying to set my mark out to do".

Former New Zealand captain Jeremy Coney on Test Match Special: "New Zealand's middle order looked to me as though they didn't know how to defend spin bowling, let alone attack it. Chapman's dismissal was bad".

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "We lacked discipline with the bat. The way the guys have taken wickets early on has enabled us to turn the screws in the middle", Bairstow said.

They delivered all that could reasonably be expected, putting on 84, Nicholls with a 73-ball half-century on his home ground and Santner capping his remarkable series from number eight with a new career-best. A separate New Zealand XI team will also take on England in a pink ball warm-up on Wednesday and Thursday. "England were outstanding and they deserved to win the series".
