They have said they will have a meeting on Monday, March 12. "Elections come and go but Kenya remains".

Mr Kenyatta and Mr Odinga met publicly at a funeral service where they shook hands earlier this year, but they did not have talks.

"The symbolism is very important but it is vital that they also invest heavily in ensuring that a more lasting settlement emerges from their talks", he said, citing the need to stamp out violence every time elections are called.

"There is no question about US commitment to Kenya on trade and security", he said, according to a statement issued after the meeting from Kenyatta's office.

The election season blunted growth in Kenya, East Africa's richest economy and a western ally in a volatile region.

In September, after Kenya's Supreme Court overturned President Uhuru Kenyatta's election victory and ordered a new poll, Kenyatta dismissed the judges as "wakora", meaning "crooks" in Swahili.

While political violence did not come close to that which followed the 2007 vote - when over 1,100 lives were lost - the disputed elections led to the deaths of over 100 people, majority shot by police.

In a statement issued barely hours after photos of the Kenyatta-Raila meeting were circulated, Miguna - now in Canada, said he rejected Odinga's betrayal of the People of Kenya.

Political analyst and writer Patrick Gathara said such a dialogue is still needed despite Friday's meeting.

Mr Odinga said that nothing had been changed before the re-run.

A statement signed by Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula stated that they were not part of the meeting.

Just hours before the summit announcement, which emerged late on Thursday, Tillerson had said Washington was "a long way" from talking directly to North Korea as he kicked off his five-nation Africa tour.

Through his Twitter account, Mutua warned Kenyatta and Odinga "not to be derailed by a few known fence sitters".

The two - who, after their meeting, appeared together to give separate statements to the press - acknowledged the country was heading in the wrong direction.

That's not a coincidence, said independent political analyst Martin Andati. He also said the country had a "problem" with its judiciary that needed to be fixed.

He later met with President at State House where he stated the USA was interested in widening its investment in Kenya as well as strengthening the bilateral and trade relations between the two countries.
