Florida has seen three mass shootings in under two years - 49 were killed at an Orlando nightclub in 2016, five at Fort Lauderdale's worldwide airport in 2017, and now 17 in Parkland.

Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, says the bill "punishes law-abiding gun owners for the criminal acts of a deranged individual". "There are just no words".

The NRA suit, filed in the Northern District of Florida, focuses on the part of the law that raises the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21 from 18. The organization also contends federal law already prevents many Americans 21 or younger from buying certain types of guns.

Even Scott admitted Friday he wasn't fully satisfied with the bill - but said that compromise was important in getting legislation passed before legislators ended their annual session this week.

President Donald Trump has suggested arming teachers to act as a deterrent to possible acts of violence, something that Peninsula-area school divisions either disagreed with or deferred comment on. The Coach Aaron Feis Guardian program was named in honor of the coach who gave his life by shielding students with his body.

"Students across the country are legally required to be in schools that representatives refuse to take the action to protect", Anika Nayak, a Somerville High School student and one of the organizers, said in the statement. And while this bill was significantly changed on this topic, I am still not persuaded. "Females between the ages of 18 and 21 pose a relatively slight risk of perpetrating a school shooting such as the one that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, or, for that matter, a violent crime of any kind". "You didn't let up and you fought until there was change".

The bill signed Friday falls short of what numerous shooting's survivors advocated for.

Tony Montalto, whose daughter Gina died in the shooting, said the law is the "beginning of the journey".

"It's nowhere near what we want, but it's progress and uplifting to see".

Gun lobbyist Marion Hammer returns to her seat after speaking in the Senate Rules Committee meeting on gun safety in the Knott Building at the Florida state Capitol in Tallahassee, on Feb 26. The proposal, now headed to Gov. Rick Scott, addresses mental health services, some gun restrictions and controversial guidelines to allow schools to have some employees carry weapons.

A 12-time NBA All-Star who was traded back to Miami on February 8, Wade posed for pictures with faculty members and students, some of whom have used their platform in recent weeks to advocate for gun control legislation.

Seventeen people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when a 19-year-old man with a semi-automatic military-style rifle opened fire.

For some shooting survivors who demanded an assault weapons ban, the measure didn't go far enough. Others called for stricter measures to acquire arms.

A group of families of victims and survivors of the shooting praised the legislation's passage in a message posted on Twitter and urged Republican Governor Rick Scott to sign the bill. If he did nothing after 15 days, it automatically became law. It also would create a so-called guardian program, enabling school employees and many teachers to carry handguns if they go through law enforcement training and their school district agrees to participate. The program is voluntary, and qualified staff members who want to carry a gun must take 144 hours of training.
