India, France ink 14 pacts; major boost to defence, nuclear energy cooperation

Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi - addressing a news conference in New Delhi after signing the agreements - also committed to strengthening their partnership on defence andsecurity. On Friday, Macron inspected a Guard of Honour, visited Raj Ghat and met Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj before holding a bilateral meeting with PM Modi.

The last visit of President Macron to India was in January 2016, when he was the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations. "We want our (India and France) youth to know each other's countries, understand and work so that thousands of ambassadors are ready for our relations and in this direction we have signed two agreements today", he said. "I am happy that I have got an opportunity to welcome you in India", Modi said.

On his part, Macron said India and France have made a decision to work together to deal with threats of terrorism and radicalisation.

Earlier, President Macron arrived at the Rashtrapati Bhawan and inspected a guard of honour.

Agreements in the fields of education, environment, urban development and railways were also signed in the presence of the two leaders. During his visit to Varanasi on Monday, he will inaugurate a 75 MW solar plant built by French firm Engie Solar in Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.

Both India and France agreed on common security regulations applicable to any exchange of classified and protected information.

Macron said, "Stability in the Indian Ocean is very important for the stability of the entire region, and we are with India for freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific".

This is Macron's first visit to India after he assumed office in May in 2017. "They were greedy", the French President said. Looking forward to co-chairing the Founding Conference of the International Solar Alliance with President @EmmanuelMacron on 11th March.

The agreement provides for the reciprocal provision of logistics support, supplies and services between the armed forces of the two countries during authorised port visits, joint exercises, joint training, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.

Mr Modi and Mr Macron are particularly anxious as China extended its military presence by opening a naval base in the eastern African nation of Djibouti previous year.
