Twitter Verification: Company May Open Verification Up To Everyone

In an unannounced and impromptu live stream on the Twitter-owned Periscope platform Thursday, Dorsey revealed that the social network was re-evaluating its verification policy and may pursue an option that will make it possible for all users to become verified.
Verified badges must be applied by Twitter, and accounts that use a badge as a part of profile photos, background photos, or in any other way that implies verified status, are subject to permanent account suspension. Twitter started allowing anyone to apply for verification in 2016, but it was up to the user to provide the reasons why they needed one, and few "regular" people received the mark. The company was sued by former American professional baseball player and Animal Rescue Foundation co-founder Tony La Russa in 2009 due to an account that impersonated him. In the wake of the uproar, Twitter temporarily suspended the verification program. Initially, the distinction was bestowed mainly on celebrities, athletes and public figures to curb impersonators.
For a large number of Twitter users, there is one question that crops up time and time again - "How to I get verified on Twitter?".
The idea behind the blue badge was never to endorse certain accounts, but to verify the account holder's identity, company product manager David Gasca said during the stream.

"The intention is to open verification to everyone", Dorsey said from a conference room at Twitter's San Francisco headquarters.
Although Twitter does not have the tools to measure the effectiveness of longer content, Dorsey says increasing the character limit to 280 and implementing threads has been helpful.
Twitter upped its character count from 140 to 280 back in November. Subsequently, the company began verifying other high-profile figures, including journalists, which made the checkmark perceived as a status symbol on the platform. Similarly, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been continuously denied verification by Twitter.
The goal of the livestream, according to Dorsey, was to offer more transparency around where Twitter is in the scope of how it's addressing and measuring the health of the platform.
