Palestinian medical sources said the young man, identified as Mohammad Zein al-Ja'bari, aged 24, was shot by the soldiers with a live round in his chest, in the Bab az-Zawiya area, in the center of Hebron city.

Confrontations broke out near the West Bank cities of Ramallah and Al-Bireh, where army troops used teargas and rubber bullets to disperse Palestinian protesters, eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency. "However, the new law could make the residency status of Palestinians in East Jerusalem, a protected population under International Humanitarian Law, even more precarious than it already is today", said Maja Kocijanic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, in a statement.

The demonstrations have been organized every Friday since U.S. President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and chose to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed holy city on December 6.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said four people were wounded, one of them seriously.

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers are common after Friday Muslim prayers.

The Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Israel occupied mainly Palestinian east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the worldwide community.

According to prisoners rights group Addameer, there were 6,119 Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli custody as of February.

The clashes followed a weekly demonstration against the recent USA decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
