  • Why an Emirates Adviser's Cooperation With Mueller May Be Terrible for Trump

Special counsel Robert Mueller found evidence a secret 2017 meeting in Seychelles was designed to create a back-channel for President Donald Trump's administration to talk to the Kremlin, according to The Washington Post Wednesday.

The UAE agreed to broker the meeting in part to explore whether Russian Federation could be persuaded to curtail its relationship with Iran, including in Syria, a Trump administration objective, according to U.S., European and Arab officials.

Nader began cooperating with Mueller after he arrived at Dulles Airport in mid-January and was stopped, served with a subpoena and questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Post reported. He told congressional investigators that his meeting with Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, was a passing encounter over a drink at the bar of the Four Seasons in the Seychelles, an island nation in the Indian Ocean.

GOP members of the committee have been pressing to bring the panel's Russian Federation investigation to a close and issue a report that Democratic members are not likely to endorse. During the congressional interview, which became testy at times as Democratic lawmakers pressed him to be more specific in his answers, Prince repeatedly complained that he had reason to believe US intelligence agencies were leaking information about his activities. And then there's Prince's attempts to win business from the Trump administration for his private mercenary army in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

According to the Post, investigators now suspect the Seychelles meeting may have been one of the first efforts to establish such a line of communications between the two governments.

Mueller is investigating whether the Trump campaign aided Moscow's interference in the 2016 election.

A Lebanese-American businessman who witnessed a meeting between a Trump adviser and a Russian investor is cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller for his investigation into the Trump campaign, according to a New York Times report.

Nader's reported cooperation with the Mueller probe could be an indication that Mueller and his team are focusing more closely on the Seychelles meeting.

Speaking after Lewandowski's interview concluded, Schiff said there are still, in addition to Nader and Prince, several witnesses that the committee hasn't spoken with yet, including senior White House adviser Stephen Miller.

Though Prince was not and is not part of the Trump team, people familiar with the Seychelles meeting told reporters that he presented himself as an unofficial Trump envoy to people setting up the meeting.

The meeting between Prince and Dmitriev was originally probed by the FBI as part of its investigation of the Trump campaign's Russian Federation ties before Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.
