Things to know from Tuesday's Texas primaries

But totals in the primaries for U.S. Senate told a different story: More than 1.5 million people voted in the Republican primary, with close to 100 percent reporting, compared to about 1 million Democrats, also with a near 100 percent reporting.

A tide of anti-Trump activism helped propel almost 50 women to run for Congress in Texas and more than half of them won nominations or advanced to runoffs. However, what's encouraging for liberals is that more Democrats voted in the Texas primaries than in any comparable race since 2002. Even Wendy Davis received 78 percent statewide in her 2014 Democrat primary for governor.

The runoff election on May 22 will decide who the remaining candidates will be for the November general election.

Republicans also increased their presence at the polls in 2018. We may see a combination of a lackluster GOP candidate and Democrat voter enthusiasm turning what should be a safe GOP seat blue. On the Democratic side, in the 16th District, a candidate who raised just shy of $1 million finished second - but with only about 11,000 votes missed the runoff; and a candidate in the 32nd District also raised nearly $1 million and finished third with just 5,500 votes.

More than 1 million Democrats cast ballots in the midterm primary for the first time since 2002, which were the first elections after the September 11 attacks. We've gone over acceptable forms of ID in a previous Texplainer here. Former El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar is certain to take the place of Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke in El Paso, who is running for Senate against Republican Sen. Those results had a higher margin of error but showed Democratic enthusiasm in congressional districts held by Republicans.

The Democrats have had their own internal strife in Texas over congressional hopeful Laura Moser, who moved from Washington to her native Houston to try and unseat Culberson. If Ortiz Jones were to win the runoff, then defeat the incumbent, she would become the first Filipina-American to serve in Congress. Tuesday night proved, he said, "Rural Texas still substantially gives it to Republicans". "This is not a spectator sport". She adds: "we tried that before, and look where it got us".

The women's success comes against the backdrop of the MeToo movement and a reckoning with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful figures in entertainment, media and politics, including Trump's treatment of women.

FIRST LISTEN: our new 60-second statewide radio ad introducing our liberal opponent, Congressman Robert O'Rourke, to Texas voters. The DCCC, and many other Democratic interests, say that a Democrat can't win a Republican-leaning district without winning some crossover votes, which would require more moderate candidates. For all that cold water for Democrats statewide in Texas, at the same time there is this silver lining for them - turnout in the three Republican House districts they hope to flip was on par or outpaced that of Republicans.

Three of those Republican net gains came in Texas congressional districts. "Texas results confirmed the conventional wisdom that millions of Democrats can't wait to express their displeasure with President Donald Trump at the polls", Rasmussen continued. "Left-wing rage may raise a bunch of money from people online, but I don't believe it reflects the views of a majority of Texans".

The surge of Democratic voters included some former Republicans switching this cycle, including 61-year-old Sarah Chiodo of Dallas, who said she changed parties after Trump was elected. Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is under felony indictment on charges of securities fraud, is unopposed in the primary.

It appears Democrats Lupe Valdez and Andrew White will face off to determine who will oppose the well-funded incumbent GOP governor.
