  • Opioid epidemic worsens: Wisconsin reports 108 percent rise in overdose rate

Emergency admissions to hospital for opioid overdoses rose in every part of the country from March 2016 to September 2017, according to figures released by the Centres for Disease Control (CDC).

The researchers found that 142,557 emergency department visits (15.7 per 10,000 visits) were suspected opioid-involved overdoses from July 2016 through September 2017. But they varied state-by-state, with notable differences among rural and urban areas.

It isn't clear if that's because those hard-hit states have been devoting resources to tackle the problem for longer and are seeing success, or because their rates were so high that they couldn't get higher, Schuchat said. Wisconsin had more than 3,400 ER visits for suspected opioid overdoses during the period studied. Northeast states such as DE (105%), Pennsylvania (81%), and ME (34%) also reported significant increases, as well as Southeast state North Carolina (31%). Overdoses may have actually slightly decreased in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

Rates of opioid overdoses in the ED decreased significantly by 15% in Kentucky.

"We're now seeing the highest drug overdose death rates ever recorded in the United States, driven by prescription opioids and by illicit opioids such as heroin and illicitly-manufactured fentanyl,"Anne Schuchat, MD, acting director of the CDC, said during a telebriefing on the report".

This fast-moving epidemic affects all ages, genders and states and is still increasing across the USA, she said. "It does not respect state or county lines and is still increasing in every region in the United States".

The more narrow analysis of 16 states during that time frame is based on 45 million emergency department visits and is what shows the greater variation from state to state and among jurisdictions within those states.

Despite efforts to address the crisis, opioid overdoses in the US continue to increase at a disturbing rate.

Hospitalizations for overdoses rose by 69.7 percent in the Midwest, 40.3 percent in the West, 21.3 percent in the Northeast and 20.2 percent in the Southwest.

Increases among the 3 observed age groups were very consistent: 31% in ages 25-34; 36% in ages 35-54; 32% in ages 55 or older.
