Congress set to vote on school safety bill

The Florida House of Representatives rejected three dozen amendments on Tuesday, including a last-ditch bid to strip the bill of any measures permitting school staff to carry guns to work.

If the bill is approved by the Senate it will head to the House for a vote before heading to Gov. Rick Scott's desk.

The news comes just weeks after 14 students and three staff were shot dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. In addition to the gun restrictions and arming some school personnel, it would create new mental health programs for schools, improve communication between schools, law enforcement and state agencies, create a task force to look at mistakes made during mass shootings nationally and then make recommendations on how to continue to improve law, and establish an anonymous tip line where students and others can report threats to schools.

Scott was set to meet Wednesday morning with his Cabinet. The bill was amended to bar most teachers from being able to participate.

Shortly after the Senate limited which teachers would be allowed to be armed, the governor's office called the move "a step in the right direction", but by Tuesday night, Scott's office had restated his opposition. Do I think that this bill goes far enough?

Senate Democrats have pushed a package of gun control measures in response to the Florida shooting. But Sen. Gary Farmer, D-Fort Lauderdale, said the Legislature owes it to the victims and to other schoolchildren to vote down the bill because it lacks the ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines sought by many in the Parkland community.

The walkout, on the one-month anniversary of the Florida mass shooting, will last 17 minutes to memorialize the 17 lives lost there and to protest congressional inaction on gun legislation.

"He talked about change and what needed to happen, which is kind of amusing to me - a government official did absolutely nothing, and a professional basketball player talked to us and was real with us", the 17-year-old senior said.

U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced support for arming teachers as a deterrent to gun violence in schools. Republican Sen. Bill Galvano said he asked for and received the approval of Feis' family to name the program for him. "I can not live with a choice to put party politics above an opportunity to get something done that inches us closer to the place I believe we should be as a state", she said. "We're trying hard, we don't have all the answers but we are giving it our best and we will keep giving it our best".

Tom Lee, a former Senate president who was one of six Republicans -- along with Dennis Baxley of Ocala, George Gainer of Panama City, Denise Grimsley of Sebring, Dorothy Hukill of Port Orange and Greg Steube of Sarasota -- who voted against the measure, predicted the House would accept the Senate's language.
