There's more bad news for e-cigarette users this week.
Dr. Mark Rubinstein, of UCSF's Division of Adolescent Medicine, and colleagues tested 67 teenagers who vape and compared them to 16 teens who both vape and smoke tobaccocigarettes and to 20 teens who do not use either type of cigarette. On the other hand in adolescents using both electronic and tobacco cigarette levels of toxic organic compounds more than three times than those who smoke electronic cigarette. Teens, even middle schoolers, have taken up e-cigarettes as well.
Dr Rubinstein noted that some of the toxic chemicals were found in the bodies of teens who used flavored e-cigarettes without nicotine.
More than half of the e-cigarette participants indicated using fruit- or candy-flavored products, which left significant amounts of the compound acrylonitrile, which is used widely in the manufacturing of plastics, adhesives and synthetic rubber.
E-cigarettes sometimes contain nicotine, and sometimes they use nicotine-free solutions.
"Although the pairs of e-cigarettes may be less unsafe than tobacco smoke, our results can be used to challenge the idea that the vapor electronic cigarettes safe, because numerous volatile organic compounds that we identified are carcinogenic", write the researchers in their study. But on top of that, there hasn't been a ton of research done on how damaging they can be to kids with or without nicotine - until now.
When used as a predictive factor, any e-cigarette use was positively associated with current established smoking (OR = 1.80; 95% CI, 1.04-3.12); however, no statistical significance was observed regarding the connection between e-cigarette use and established smoking or smoking within the past 30 days.
After the 2016 CDC report was released, the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics Dr Benard Dreyer called the increasing rates of e-cigarette use among youths a "major public health concern".
"So while it sounds terrible, they don't compare it to cigarettes and they're not telling you what the levels in these devices are", owner of Norcal Vape Keri Hess said. This trending, however, has been proved to turn e-cigs teens vapers into regular cigarettes smokers.
