  • Trump takes nosedive on Forbes billionaires list

Forbes said a record 35 people have joined the list of the world's billionaires, with the magazine calculating there are now 2,208 people with a net worth of more than $1billion.

The 39-year-old financial technology entrepreneur Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who ranks 1,394th globally with $1.7 billion, is the youngest Indian on the Forbes list. He had been in the top spot for four previous years.

The Bezos milestone, revealed in Tuesday's release of Forbes' closely watched list, underscores the growing clout of both Bezos and the company that he founded in 1994 as an online bookstore.

Amazon's shares have almost doubled from $846 a share last March to 1,523 dollars per share last night. Ma Huateng (also known as Pony Ma) is Asia's wealthiest person, ranked number 17 in the world, thanks in part to his firm Tencent's WeChat, a ubiquitous social-messaging app with almost 1 billion active users.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates dropped one spot from previous year to No. 2, with $90 billion. As of February 9, Bezos' wealth stood at $112 billion as of February 9, up from about $73 billion previous year, according to Forbes. He dethroned Microsoft founder Bill Gates who sits 2nd with $90 billion, followed by legendary investor Warren Buffett at 3rd with $82 billion.

The richest person in Europe and fourth on the list is Bernard Arnault, head of luxury goods firm LVMH, who has a fortune of $72bn.

Sun Pharmaceuticals founder Dilip Shanghvi ranks next as the fifth riches Indian with $12.8 billion at the 115th global spot.

This year's list contains billionaires from 72 different countries and territories, with moguls from Zimbabwe and Hungary appearing on the ranking for the first time.

The other Indians on the list are the Hinduja family ($19.5 billion), Wipro Chairman Azim Premji ($18.8 billion), steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal ($18.5 billion), and HCL founder Shiv Nadar ($14.6 billion). Facebook shares were trading near 180.45, up a fraction.
