  • Ichiro Suzuki Mariners finalizing one-year deal report says

Outfielder Ichiro and the Seattle Mariners are finalizing a one-year deal that would bring back the legendary Japanese star to the place where he started his Major League Baseball career, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

According to a report Monday in USA Today citing an anonymous source, the club and its former hero (2001-12) are nearing an agreement on a one-year deal.

The news comes as the Mariners learned they'll be without outfielder Ben Gamel for four to six weeks due to a strained right oblique muscle.

He played in 136 games for the Miami Marlins last season, predominantly as a pinch-hitter.

Ichiro spent the majority of his 17-year major league career in Seattle, signing with the Mariners in 2001 when he was 27 to begin his major league career after he had 1,278 hits while playing nine years in Japan. Ichiro could also provide some help early for the Mariners, who are dealing with multiple injuries in the outfield. Suzuki played his first 11 full seasons in the majors with Seattle before being traded to the New York Yankees midway through the 2012 season.

The Mariners could seek a free agent like Jon Jay or Carlos Gonzalez, though would likely offer just a one-year deal.

In his first 10 seasons, he accumulated at least 200 hits each year, including an all-time single-season record of 262 in 2004.
