Apple is working on noise-cancelling, over-the-ear headphones with a release date aimed for the end of this year, Bloomberg reported Monday.

The upcoming noise-canceling headphones will reportedly launch as early as the end of this year but could be facing development problems that would force it back into 2019. According to Bloomberg, the company is said to be developing a pair of over-ear headphones that will work similarly to AirPods in which they'll be simple to pair with your iOS device. Although the company plans to release the headphones as early as 4Q18, the site notes that there have been setbacks.

It's clear that Apple wants to pin a premium price tag on the headphones but finding that sweet spot among offerings from market leaders such as Bose and Sennheiser will be crucial.

AirPods have seemingly been a big success story for Apple. A new wireless chip is said to enable "Hey Siri" voice activation on the next generation AirPods.

These Apple-branded headphones could also cannibalize Beats headphones, although Beats manages to sell lower-priced wireless headphones that probably won't directly compete with the new product. Apple purchased Beats for $3 billion in 2014, and Beats has been Apple's main headphone brand until the introduction of AirPods.

Researcher NPD Group said past year that sales of AirPods and Beats headphones gave Apple 27 percent of the wireless headphone market and nearly half the dollars spent on the category. That means a pair of the new headphones may run you anywhere from $350 to $500 based on the pricing of existing products in the market. Beats headphones, along with AirPods, have also helped Apple dominate the headphone market.

There's no word on when the headphones will arrive.
