Uber Launches Ride-Hailing Platform for Healthcare

  • Uber Health Will Drive You To Doctor's Appointments

Uber Health will partner with health care providers, who will be able to schedule rides for patients using a special digital platform. Last July, the nonprofit organization Disability Rights Advocate sued Uber for discrimination in NY state, alleging that UberWAV provides inconsistent access to wheelchair-friendly vehicles and prolonged wait times. Text messages will alert patients about their rides, which are covered by providers, and they will be picked up by Uber drivers.

Uber has announced a new program to help get people to and from their medical appointments. So far, more than 100 organizations are on board, including hospitals, rehab centers, senior care facilities and physical therapy centers.

The handy thing here is that because all the booking is handled by the provider, even patients without smartphones can use the service. Both Uber and its primary competitor, Lyft, have previously undertaken partnerships aimed at capturing the patient transportation market and helping to improve access to care. Uber has thus teamed up with healthcare organizations to provide reliable transportation for patients.

As great as Uber Health sounds, it's perhaps understandable to be a bit skeptical of the service given Uber's track record when it comes to handling sensitive data. As of now, Uber Health is only available in the United States, but it may very well expand to other countries and regions in the coming months.

Uber has unveiled its latest initiative which will be known as Uber Health in a bid to bring mobility to the health sector.

Numerous rides are provided to people who can't drive-either because of age, poverty or medical condition-and Medicare and Medicaid providers cover at least some of the cost of transportation. Rival Lyft also has been working with healthcare providers over the past few years.

Everyone needs to visit a doctor at some point, but not everyone can drive there.

New Orleans still does not have access to wheelchair-accessible Ubers through the company's platform UberWAV, which is available in larger cities such as San Francisco and Washington D.C. The service did not provide information on when UberWAV will be made available locally. When patients don't show up, it hurts revenue, messes up schedules and physician workflow, and impacts access not only for the patients who miss their appointments but also for patients who could have taken that slot.
