The suspect who died when he downed a vial of home-made poison at the end of a police chase near Los Angeles has been pictured as it is revealed he was wanted for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. That's what happened Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The substance that the suspect ingested was tested by the Ventura Fire Department's Hazmat team and determined to be a mixture of sodium chloride and potassium cyanide, Terry said. CHP officials said information came back on the auto belonging to a rape suspect. The suspect was declared dead at the scene. The auto eventually came to a stop on the center divide of the 101 Highway near Seward Avenue in Ventura, and officers surrounded the vehicle.

Officer Kevin Denharder says the man, a Camarillo resident in his 30s, was found dead Wednesday morning after his vehicle crashed into the center median of Interstate 101 in Ventura.

Los Angeles police contacted the California Highway Patrol at around 7.30am to tell them undercover officers were covering Hanks, who was driving in a black Nissan Versa.

Authorities said earlier on in the chase shots were fired, but said they weren't fired at the time Hanks drank the poison.

The vehicle continued northbound until patrol officers observed it yield on the right side of the roadway near Seaward Avenue before it crossed all lanes of traffic and stopped in the center divider, Denharder said. A firefighter wore a gas mask during an initial inspection of the suspect's vehicle.

A man suspected of rape led police on a auto chase in Ventura County on Wednesday morning, then killed himself by ingesting poison before he could be apprehended, authorities said.

The LAPD had no immediate comment.

"He drank something he had concocted", Denharder told the Los Angeles Times.
