Local tech company hoping net neutrality is saved

The Federal Communications Commission's repeal of net neutrality is scheduled to take effect on April 23, according to a copy of the order was published with the Federal Register on Thursday.

As expected, the FCC has voted to eliminate the requirement that broadcasters and cable operators keep paper copies of the FCC's regulations on hand, the latest in a series of actions to whack away at regulations FCC Chair Ajit Pai has said are part of a regulatory underbrush allowed to grow for too long.

The most effective solution here is to reverse the FCC's repeal and reinstate the net neutrality rules.

"The sky is not falling", he said. Without these rules, Internet service providers may force websites to pay fees for faster Internet speeds, while limiting consumers' ability to access the Internet content of their choice.

"The internet has to be a neutral place, it has to be a level playing field, everybody had to have equal access".

Meanwhile, state attorney generals have already signalled their intention to file lawsuits challenging the net neutrality repeal in court, as have pro-net-neutrality advocacy groups. Apparently, the White House Office of Management and Budget still must sign off on some aspects of the FCC reversal before it takes legal effect.

Denelle Dixon, chief business and legal officer at Mozilla, wrote in a post on the tech company's blog that Mozilla refiled a challenge to the repeal "immediately after the order was published".

Votes fell along party lines in December, with the FCC board's Republicans favoring the repeal and the two Democrats on the board voting against it. It turned a blind eye to all kinds of corruption in our public record, from Russian intervention to fake comments to stolen identities in our files.

A vote was scheduled for the February 22 public meeting, but was voted on circulation February 20 and removed from the agenda for the meeting.

"Despite the hard blow [FCC] Chairman [Ajit] Pai has dealt to the Open Internet, small businesses, and consumers, the fight for net neutrality continues", John Bergmayer, the group's senior counsel, said in a statement. "The FCC is on the wrong side of history and the wrong side of the law and it deserves to have its handiwork revisited, reexamined, and ultimately reversed".
