In addition to having to walk a little prior to the journey, riders will also have to walk a bit at the end of their journey to reach their final destination. Afterwards, the app will direct riders to walk about a block or two to meet up at a common pick up spot. The Uber Express Pool feature is similar to Ola's Ride Express in India, that lets users share cab rides on fixed routes.

Today, Uber is launching a new spin on its ride-hailing service called Express Pool - a service for passengers who don't mind commuting with strangers or being picked up and dropped off at specified locations. But the new option streamlines the existing Pool program, which means less wait time and better matched riders who are also traveling along your route thanks to Express Pool. Then, "we're asking you to walk about a block and a half from your house to a street corner". It will cost up to 50 percent less than Uber POOL and up to 75 percent less than UberX.

From a public policy perspective, these types of ride-pooling services represent an enormous opportunity to provide more high quality, cheap transportation to more people who don't have access to cars or public transit than ever before, said Daniel Sperling, director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California-Davis. This is key if Uber hopes to sustain the POOL model - Uber POOL rides comprise only about 20 percent of business in areas where the option is available. Prices will vary depending on time of day, and Express will not be immune from surge pricing.

Like the existing UberPool service, Express Pool groups multiple riders into one vehicle.

"The future of transportation in cities includes a shift towards more space-efficient modes of transportation and away from personal vehicle ownership", Zipcar co-founder Robin Chase said in the release.

"People loved the price, but they had mixed feelings about the experience", Stock said of Uber Pool.

In 2014 when Uber launched POOL, we had the vision of getting more people into fewer cars.

Figures reported by The Information and confirmed by AFP showed that Uber's losses in 2017 grew to $4.5 billion from the $2.8 billion the San Francisco-based firm lost a year earlier.

"Express Pool, in combination with public transit, cycling, car-sharing and more, can help us get towards this shift, and I'm extremely excited about the potential impact this product can have on cities".
