As is always the case, Boston Dynamics has revealed very little information except this latest video, but it is now heading into a new future since its takeover by Japanese tech giant SoftBank in June of past year. Today's upload is a mix of both because the adorable version of the SpotMini - the updated dog-like quadruped unveiled in November - is back, and this time around it's learned how to open (and hold!) doors.

In a YouTube video with over a million views, a four-legged robot made by Boston Dynamics opens a door.

Boston Dynamics" insanely realistic "robo-dog' is growing big on dexterity and showing off a new trick from its book - an ability to open and hold doors.

Just a few months ago, Boston Dynamics introduced us to a robot that can do backflips.

The robot then grabs the handle, turns it, and pulls back the door.

Either engineers are all universally so swept up in the excitement of making robots that they can't spot how terrifying their creations look, or they're doing this deliberately. Until 2017, however, the company was owned by Google, later Alphabet, which had acquired it in 2013.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said at the time of the agreed-upon purchase that "there are many issues we still can not solve by ourselves with human capabilities".

The two companies were always an uneasy fit. Now they can open doors, CBS Boston reports.

Why does Boston Dynamics seemingly brag about being the developers of our future mass murderers and robot overlords? "They're coming to murder us", said another. But shortly after the acquisition Rubin departed to form a new smartphone company, Essential, and Boston Dynamics was left rudderless within the wider firm.

In the 45-second video, titled 'Hey Buddy, Can You Give Me a Hand?' a SpotMini walks over to a door before realizing it can't get through. "[I] don't think we are the pie-in-the-sky guys as much as everyone thinks we are".
