Southwest: Midway flights near normal after de-icing woes

  • FILE Southwest Airlines cancelled more than 200 flights out of Midway International Airport Sunday

Soon after the fire was reported, the airline crew chose to evacuate passengers from the plane, the airport said in tweet.

According to CBS Los Angeles, smoke was detected in the cabin but all the 139 passengers escaped unscathed, save for some minor injuries as a result of going down the slides.

The incident comes after a tumultuous couple of days for Southwest Airlines, which on Sunday was forced to cancel hundreds of flights from Chicago's Midway International Airport due to a shortage of de-icing fluids. An hour after the fire was first reported, Southwest Airlines was still working on getting those passengers onto other flights the same night, Thompson said. The airline said flight 2123 was pushing back from the gate when the ground crew observed a possible fire near the rear exterior of the aircraft.

The airline said it "expects to operate a close to normal schedule" on Monday.

According to the airport's Twitter account, the fire, which was apparently in the auxiliary power unit, has already been extinguished, while operations are "back to normal".

Chicago has recorded measurable snowfall every day since February 3, tying a record for the longest such stretch that's only been matched twice since 1885, the National Weather Service said.
