  • American Luger Emily Sweeney Has Terrifying Crash

Sweeney was rounding the infamously hard Curve 9 on the track when she began to speed back and forth out of control-at about 60 miles per hour.

But Sweeney flashed a quick smile to reassure her fans as she walked along the track to the Olympic Village clinic for further examination.

Emily Sweeney's mum, Sue (centre), watches on in horror as her daughter crashes during her luge run.

Emily Sweeney was thrown from her toboggan after getting sideways on the track. "It's pretty crushing", she said after the crash. She was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

After the conclusion of the event she reappeared at the track flanked by several members of USA Luge and while she didn't stop for questions she did say, "I'm fine, I'm OK". "Thank you all so much for the supportive messages". "I knew I wanted to continue being an athlete, but I didn't want to only be an athlete".

Pyeongchang is Sweeney's first Olympics after missing the Sochi Games in 2014.

Curve 9 has been a problem for sliders throughout the early portion of the Olympics, causing many to skid, lose control and lose some time.

The crash came on the treacherous stretch of the course from Turn 12 to Turn 9, where multiple athletes have faltered on this course. "I thought it was a great avenue of opportunity", Emily said about joining the military.

Later in the final run, Britcher lost control at the start and collided with some walls - but got down the track without crashing or serious injury.

After a brief delay, the competition resumed.

The Associated Press contributed to this reported.
