  • United Kingdom foreign minister set to visit Rohingya refugee camp

He met Rohingya families and community leaders to learn about the persecution they have suffered, and hear first-hand about the challenges that life in the camps presents.

The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has called for the safe and dignified return of the Rohingya people to Myanmar.

"While I welcome steps by both the Burmese and Bangladeshi governments towards ensuring that these people can return home, it is vital that the Rohingya refugees must be allowed to their homes in Rakhine voluntarily, in safety and with dignity, under global oversight, and when the conditions in Burma are right", he said.

But Myanmar has staunchly denied the charges and blocked United Nations investigators from the conflict zone, souring relations with a host of western allies.

Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) estimates 6,700 Rohingya died in the first month of violence.

The Reuters investigation of the Inn Din massacre was what prompted the arrest of two of its reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who were detained on December 12 a year ago for allegedly obtaining confidential documents.

But the Nobel laureate has refused to change tack and is accused by critics of adopting a siege mentality.

Myanmar must find a safe and dignified way for Rohingya Muslims to return, the United Kingdom foreign secretary has said, after meeting the government of Bangladesh.

"Discussed importance of Burmese authorities in carrying out full & independent investigation into the violence in #Rakhine & urgent need to create the right conditions for #Rohingya refugees to return to their homes in Rakhine", Johnson wrote on his Twitter account of his meeting with Suu Kyi, who also serves as foreign minister.

"It is vital the public knows what happened and the world knows what happened in Rakhine and who was responsible", Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Boris Johnson told Reuters in Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh.

Mr Johnson visited a UNICEF child-friendly site where he saw the efforts being made to keep young people safe.

On Friday, Myanmar's Catholic cardinal said it's likely that Rohingya Muslim refugees in Bangladesh won't ever go home, and that "the elements of ethnic cleansing" that drove them out are now apparent.

In January plans to begin repatriating refugees stalled over fears many could be forced back into hostile territory against their will.

Johnson is scheduled to fly on to Bangkok later on Sunday for a visit that will include meetings with junta chief Prayut Chan-o-cha and the Thai chairman of an advisory board on the Rohingya crisis.
