  • Eurostar confirms April launch date for London-Amsterdam

However, the return journey will take a little longer as the Dutch authorities haven't arranged for passport checks at Amsterdam station.

Eurostar says the route is the result of "extensive investment" of £1 billion in high-speed rail on both sides of the English Channel.

"The launch of our service to the Netherlands represents an exciting advance in cross-Channel travel and heralds a new era in global high speed rail", Eurostar Chief Executive Nicolas Petrovic said. However, Eurostar says this will be a temporary process while the governments of the United Kingdom and Netherlands negotiate an agreement to enable passport checks to be carried out in the Netherlands.

Tickets starting at £35 one way will go on sale on February 20, with the first train scheduled to leave St Pancras International on April 4.

The new high-speed rail route is created to compete with airline journeys to the Netherlands, by undercutting total prices, emissions and time spent on airline travel.

A new rail service is set to whiz passengers from London direct to Europe's own Sin City: Amsterdam.

While direct train service from London to Amsterdam launches in April, it was announced on Monday that direct trips from Amsterdam to London will not be implemented until 2020 due to ongoing negotiations regarding security and border controls. It will target potential converts by saying a London-Amsterdam Eurostar journey emits 80% less carbonthan the equivalent flight. Eurostar expects this will be completed by late 2019. They will run nonstop to Brussels, Belgium, in one hour and 48 minutes, shaving 17 minutes off the Eurostar's current travel time between these two cities. These customers will see their journey time cut by 17 minutes as the time onboard is reduced from 2hr05 to 1hr48.
