Apple confirms iPhone source code leak

  • This leak is bad news for iPhone users

Sure, security measures on current versions of iOS may provide protection from most, but pouring over lines of code could give hackers insights into vulnerabilities and potential weak spots that hackers were heretofore unaware of. Rusty Carter, VP of Product at Arxan Technologies commented below.

Apple though ruled out any such possibility claiming the iBoot process that has got leaked pertains to iOS 9.

The leak of the code- called iBoot - was reported by news site Motherboard. Strangely, reports of the code leaking didn't surface in the media at that time.

"Apple iOS is widely viewed as the most trusted mobile operating system out there". "An attacker can look at how Apple has documented their fuzzing process and look for bugs outside of that process, specifically so that the bugs they find will last longer". This corroborates with Motherboard's verification that additional source code and file names that were not part of the GitHub leak were spotted in screenshots of the code. In doing so, Apple further confirmed - under the penalty of perjury - the legitimacy of the source code.

When an iPhone has been jailbroken, users can run software that's not typically allowed or delete applications that come pre-loaded on the device, also known as 'bloatware'.

While clarifying, the company said that the iPhone security doesn't rely on source code secrecy.

There's been a huge leak on the web today, which has put every iPhone on the market in danger in terms of security.

"iBoot is the one component Apple has been holding on to, still encrypting its 64 bit image", Levin said. They then shared the code with an increasing number of other coders until it eventually leaked on Reddit and was subsequently uploaded to Github by someone unknown to the original coterie of jailbreaking enthusiasts. "There are many layers of hardware and software protections built into our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the protections". The leaks feature a source code that could potentially expose iPhone devices to risks and hacking. There are also concerns it could uncover new security vulnerabilities in iOS, which may be found by attackers. According to Motherboard, it was down to a "low-level Apple employee" who worked at the company in 2016, around the time of iOS 9.
