Up to 10 inches of snow expected by Friday evening in Chicago

  • Winter storm in Midwest has turned deadly

In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the city was gearing up for more snow through the weekend after crews dealt with 6 to 7 inches overnight.

"Ingham Co.is saying that 4-7" is a pretty good bet for northern parts of the county with heavier amounts in the southern half, which could see 5-9", maybe even 10 plus inches. Delays at O'Hare are averaging 35 minutes and less than 15 minutes at Midway. CPS officials say they anticipate students being back in classrooms Monday.

It's also snarling traffic and closing some freeways.

Hundreds of schools closed in Detroit due to the storm, as well, with between 6 and 9 inches of snow expected to fall through Friday.

Chicago's metropolitan area was blanketed with its heaviest snowfall since at least late 2016 as the storm put an icy grip on much of Wisconsin, northern IL and MI.

Totals could be about a foot by day's end.

The Des Moines Register reported that three to seven inches of snow fell in northern Iowa Friday morning. In southeastern MI, a winter storm watch is in effect through Friday night with 5 to 9 inches forecast in Detroit and its suburbs.

By early Friday, more than 100 flights were canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan.

Schools in Detroit shut for the day along with Wayne State University in Detroit and other schools across MI in the path of the storm.

A winter storm swept across the northern U.S. Midwest on Friday, dumping up to nine inches (23 cm) of snow on Chicago, killing at least two people and snarling hundreds of flights as it rolled east to threaten NY state and New England. Snow across southern and central MI ranged from 7 inches on the western side of the state to about 5 inches in the Detroit area. Kurt Kotenberg, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, told the Register that most of the snow fall in the morning hours fell along Highway 20. But the threat of the largest snowstorm of the season prompted school districts in Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee to cancel classes Friday.

Meteorologist Heather Orow in Grand Rapids, Michigan, says the storm is "generally going to be an issue for travel".

A winter storm moving across the Great Lakes that's forecast to drop about a foot of snow in some areas has closed schools and forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

Midwest residents often boast that they are well prepared for winter weather and school is rarely called off.

The storm could dump up to a foot (30 cm) of snow in NY state as it picks up moisture off the Great Lakes, he added.

American, United and Southwest airlines warned travelers to expect more flight cancellations to and from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
